One of our wheel bearing went bad and despite some bad information from the dealer, we decided to self diagnose and fix our wheel bearing. Sometimes it comes when just driving in 2wd the other times when shifting into 4wd. I took it to the dealership 3 times so far. The first time they said they replaced all 3 IWE'S.The issue ended up being the torque converter studs in the transmission hitting the flex plate. Apparently Ford makes a different flex plate to fix this rare issue. If the sound increases/changes pitch with the speed of the engine (while standing still or moving) then it's an engine issue, if it changes with the vehicle speed then it's a driveline problem.IWE noises are only evident while in motion, as would any other rotational noises that are common such as differential bearings. Groaning noises are usually associated with a bad bearing, generally speaking, a wheel bearing. Unless you have an F150 in which case it could also be bad front differential bearings.Some 2013-2018 F-150/Expedition/Navigator vehicles may exhibit an intermittent grinding noise coming from the right or left IWE area in 2WD mode.
