The Vulcan 500 should have no problems starting or operating in very cold temperatures (other than being just a little fickle like any carbed bike, but it will definitely crank)It is noticeable in first and second, but its really bad in 3, 4, and 5th. I rode another fellows Vulcan 1500 of the same year and model and it was very quite, no noise like that. This is not a valve noise, its a severe noise which sounds to me like backlash in a gear set.
