Marlin added the retaining stud in 1988. As the picture indicates, the outer edge of the stud is just enough to keep the firing pin from being removed. The factory two piece is designed as a safety thing, as it prevents firing in case the bolt is not in battery, which can be hazardous to your health. Some times it will fire several shots OK but for the most part misfires are more often than not.
